About the logo: The Art of Becoming a Collective is represented with lines intersecting a circle, symbolizing; individuals and togetherness; distinction and collaboration; differentiated but whole.

I recently had a conversation with a client in which we discussed at some length the nature of harmony. Webster Dictionary defines harmony as, “A pleasing arrangement of parts” or as “an interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative.” Harmony is often linked with music where the combination of chords simultaneously coming together creates something more beautiful than a single note or chord existing on its own. We see it in dance, as two or more people interweave and co-create an embodied melody that if danced alone would be something else entirely.

The reality is that harmony is what we were created for; it is the very place that we come most alive. And like a graceful dance, or a beautiful song, the art of becoming requires an encounter with another.

At The Art of Becoming a Collective, we believe that we are wired for harmony with self, and wired for harmony with other. A healthy self is made up of individual harmonized parts that have the potential to co-create a healthy other, and two or more selves have the potential to become radically different and new as they co-create together. But like an individual chord is made up of individual notes, so too a harmonized collective of people is made up of individuals.

We don’t have harmony without individuation, distinction, and differentiation. This is represented by the lines.

We also can’t have harmony without togetherness, collaboration, and wholeness. This is represented by the circle.

But harmony isn’t the final call. There is a reason we choose to harmonize, to come together, to intersect and interweave. There is a reason we sing, dance, and play together. We do so because it is at the intersection of self and other that we tap into the art of becoming. An individual standing on his/her own can be beautiful, good, and healthy. But an individual tapping into the power of harmony with another becomes even more beautiful, more good, more healthy. It is in the interweaving that we become, and in becoming that we begin to hope.

Ultimately, we choose to harmonize because we choose to hope. We choose to hope that the song we sing is never finished, that there will always be another voice to add to the chorus, another body to add to the dance, and in so doing, another layer of beauty awaiting our arrival just beyond the horizon.
